ANAS Ordinance 340/2019 regulates the alternate license plate traffic system along State Road 163 “Amalfitana”. Here is how it works, including the 2026 updates.
Please note that the ANAS ordinance officially states that the alternate license plate system applies from June 15 to September 30. However, following subsequent ordinances issued by the municipalities of the Amalfi Coast, after the initial periods covering Easter and the public holidays between Liberation Day and May Day, the restrictions begin on June 1 and end on October 31, according to the rules outlined below.
Where the alternate license plate system applies on the Amalfi Coast
It is important to clarify exactly where these restrictions apply. The ordinance concerns only State Road 163 Amalfitana (SS163), which is approximately 40 km long. It begins in Vietri sul Mare and ends in Positano, passing through Cetara, Maiori, Minori, Ravello, Atrani, Amalfi, Conca dei Marini, Furore and Praiano.
All other roads in the area are excluded from the alternate license plate restrictions. For example, the Provincial Road leading to the Chiunzi Pass, including its two branches towards Maiori and Ravello, and Regional Road SR 366 Agerolina are not affected.
How the alternate license plate system works
On even-numbered dates, vehicles whose license plate’s last numerical digit is even CANNOT circulate.
On odd-numbered dates, vehicles whose license plate’s last numerical digit is odd CANNOT circulate.
When in effect, the alternate license plate restrictions apply from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Outside these hours, vehicles may travel along State Road 163 Amalfitana without these restrictions.
Two-wheeled vehicles are not affected by the ordinance, including motorcycles and scooters.
The restrictions for heavy and oversized vehicles established by ANAS Ordinance 337/2019 remain in force.
When the alternate license plate system applies on the Amalfi Coast
During Holy Week through Easter Monday, the alternate license plate system applies:
Every day from March 30 to April 6, 2026
During the holiday period covering Liberation Day and May Day, the restrictions apply:
Every day from April 25 to May 2, 2026
From June 1 to July 31, the alternate license plate system applies on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The affected dates are:
May 30 and 31; June 1 and 2, 2026 (Tuesday, June 2 is Italian Republic Day, a national holiday, extending the restriction throughout the holiday weekend);
June 6 and 7, 2026;
June 13 and 14, 2026;
June 20 and 21, 2026;
June 27 and 28, 2026;
July 4 and 5, 2026;
July 11 and 12, 2026;
July 18 and 19, 2026;
July 25 and 26, 2026.
During August and September, the alternate license plate system applies:
Every day from August 1 to August 31, 2026;
Every day from September 1 to September 30, 2026.
From October 1 to October 31, the restrictions apply on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, on the following dates:
October 3 and 4, 2026;
October 10 and 11, 2026;
October 17 and 18, 2026;
October 24 and 25, 2026;
Saturday, October 31, 2026.
Exemptions from the alternate license plate restrictions on State Road 163 Amalfitana
As provided for by ANAS Ordinance 340/2019, the following categories may circulate without being subject to the alternate license plate restrictions:
Residents of the 13 municipalities of the Amalfi Coast, as well as Agerola;
vehicles displaying a valid disabled parking permit, provided that the permit holder is travelling in the vehicle;
taxis and NCC vehicles (private hire vehicles with driver);
emergency vehicles and vehicles belonging to the Police and law enforcement authorities.
The following categories are also exempt from the restrictions under specific circumstances:
Guests staying at hotels and other accommodation facilities who have a valid reservation may travel regardless of their license plate only for journeys necessary to reach their accommodation on the day of check-in and to leave on the day of check-out, following amendments to the ANAS ordinance introduced by the municipalities in the area. For any other journey by car during their stay, visitors are subject to the alternate license plate restrictions.
Employees who do not reside on the Amalfi Coast but hold a valid employment contract in one of the 13 municipalities of the Amalfi Coast or in Agerola may travel regardless of the restrictions only for work-related journeys.
Owners of properties in the 14 municipalities who are not residents may qualify for an exemption. To do so, they must request the appropriate certification from the municipality in which their property is located.
